Copyright (Australian Copyright Council)
In addition to its publications and factsheets, there are links to its training programmes for writers, website and online publishers, libraries and educational insitutions and government departments and agencies. The Council offers training on moral rights and has a free legal advice service.



RECENT DEVELOPMENTS


Creative Commons
In response to some of the issues raised in this 2003 edition of NOW, Lawrence Lessig suggested a new type of some-rights registration.
Creative Commons is non-profit organization publishing works under a voluntary "some rights reserved" copyright, thus making works free for futher creative use.
Yahoo has developed a specific search engine to locate these works.
This model is also being developed for music.

Digital Agenda Amendments (Australian Copyright Council)
Information sheet summarizing the changes in copyright protection and action constituting infringement enacted in the Digital Agenda amendments of March 2004.
The information sheets on this site include relatively recent information on many areas of copyright not commonly covered, such as design of functional articles (furniture, toys, accessories).

Copyright Agency Limited (Australia)
The Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) is a not-for-profit company that centrally manages copyright interests for publishers and authors, including print journalists.
New regulations concerning electronic reproduction came into effect on March 4, 2001.
Licensing Options contains links to detailed guidelines and procedures for obtaining a licence to copy material for educational and other purposes (including such activities as copying press-clippings and magazine articles for internal organizational use).
nformation includes limits on how much of a work may be copied, CAL contact addresses and downloadable copies of licences.
All information in pdf format is itself copyright.

Australasian Performing Right Association Limited
This site has links for both registering work and obtaining licenses to play music at a business or on the net, as well as information about seed grants for writers of music, unclaimed royalties, tax info and FAQ for songwriters and musicians.

Viscopy (Visual Arts Copyright Collecting Agency)
Licensing site for visual works - descriptions of rights,useful links for artists, descriptions of current campaigns, and pdf forms for applying for general rights or film, broadcast/tv rights.



WRITERS' ORGANIZATIONS IN AUSTRALIA


Australian Society of Authors
The ASA sets minimum rates for pay and conditions for authors and illustrators, represents writers' interests to the government and policy-making bodies, runs mentorships in writing, gives quick and free advice on contracts, and provides many more useful services.

Australian Writers' Guild
The Australian Writers' Guild represents the professional interests of television, radio, screen and stage writers by negotiating standard agreements. The Guild also campaigns for Australian content in the media, for appropriate copyright, broadcasting and libel legislation, and on matters concerning the rights of writers generally.
