REPRODUCTION RIGHTS IN SOUTH AFRICA



Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (Pty) Limited
DALRO is a multi-purpose collecting society for stage, radio, TV and film rights, reproduction rights in visual arts, and secondary performance rights.
Once you have entered the site a pop-up window provides info on copyright in South Africa; on the Reprographic Reproduction Rights page there are internal links to a basic copyright FAQ, info on licensing (including photocopying for classroom use) and guides to fair dealing practices. Digital licensing procedures will be added when they have been developed.

Creative Commons
In response to some of the issues raised in this 2003 edition of NOW, Lawrence Lessig suggested a new type of some-rights registration.
Creative Commons is non-profit organization publishing works under a voluntary "some rights reserved" copyright, thus making works free for futher creative use.
Yahoo has developed a specific search engine to locate these works.
This model is also being developed for music.


WRITERS' ORGANIZATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA


South African Writers' Network
An online platform for freelance writers in South Africa, SAWN links to articles of interest to writers and aspiring writers and functions as a job hotline for members. There are links to purchasable self-tutoring courses, links to books by new writers, and a useful FAQ for new freelancers.

South Africa Writers Circle
The Circle offerstalks, has a monthly meeting often followed by a workshop, distributes a newsletter, runs a monthly writing competition (for members only), and supplies news of prizes and prize-giving events.
