On an Old Photograph

My mother holds
in the serrated black & white photograph
the receiver to her ear, looks
to the left in the height
of her hairdo, the short-sleeved ruffled white
blouse apron & skirt polka-dotted
slim lady's wristwatch
the wooden table before her bare
she seems so busy, so capable
that life lies ahead of her, just 20 years old
Hitler rages abroad
my mother holds the potatoes in the harvest campaign
with the same hands
which she now holds the receiver, soft
in her left
the only favorite in her heart

In the margin right the cord vanishes
