THE MOTHERS REPLY
There was nowhere else to go.
To be single was to be poor
and alone
and pitied.
So we gave ourselves to marriage
to be entered
and inhabited.
Our lives ended
at the walls of our houses.
Only our husbands were free.
Their sons followed them out,
into freedom.
When our daughters went also
who'd been with us
to be married was to be alone
and left
without pity.
