THE BULLET IN
THE
Ángel Arango AIR

(translated from the Spanish by Medea Benjamin)

First, the bullet quivered in the muzzle of the revolver like the nose of a rat. Then it slid out into the air. He saw it coming and, in the meantime, thought about Ana’s breasts, his son’s heart, which must be the size of a peach.
It was gliding through the air, under the blue sky. The lizards, on the only tree around, bit at each others’ necks. A gust of cold air made him think of his wife and remember Christmas, the toys, a dog he used to have.
He didn’t move. He was as still as the statue of Don Tancredo.
He had gotten up at five in the morning and picked up all his things. Books, papers, pencils, pens, like a schoolboy. The others were still sleeping. He made himself a cup of coffee and wearing the same clothes from the night before, went out for a walk.
He wandered about, with nowhere to go. He just followed the sidewalks and paths until he got to where he was now.
The same place he had been the night before. Alone, nursing his last hopes. He knew his weakness: he was tired; and he managed to get a hold on himself before it was too late. He walked back home in the dark and lay down on the bed to wallow comfortably in his thoughts, in his fantasies.
Everything in his head worked like a movie. Memories, experiences, the future, the reality he didn’t have and built up with images.

Andaba perdido: no tenía adonde dirigirse.
